Episode 72 | Rick Rollens: Father, Advocate, Fund Raiser

I speak with Rick Rollens. We discuss his views on the causes of autism, the work he has done for the autistic community and the need to deal with the increasing numbers of children classified as autistic. Rick’s story was a cover for NEWSWEEK and a segment on the CBS news show 60 Minutes.

How is this hub worthy? Rollins hasn't done a thing for the autistic community except dismiss, belittle, and demonize us.

The Autism Podcast does not belong on the Hub and never has. I've made this complaint before but got nowhere.

I agree with Kassiane. It really does feel like a slap in the face to open the Autism Hub page and find a name like this one.

Mr. Voll,

I'm asking nicely. Please resign from the hub as of this second. Please.

Sorry, I'm the anonymous and didn't sign as CS.

And beyond the name, such utter bullshit. I stopped listening about halfway through. If he didn't explain Schechter and Grether (2008) to you after the first half, you really ought to ask him to - right after you request delisting this blog from The Autism Hub.

This is wrong on so many levels I don't know where to begin, but first and foremost: Rick Rollens is not an advocate. Officially, he's a lobbyist with ARCA (for the Calif. Regional Centers). In working practice, he's an anti-advocate. His entire interview was filled with outright untruths. He's completely incorrect about the "full syndrome" and epidemic stuff he promotes, but he does so because it's beneficial to him in his position as a lobbyist. As a Californian who is very familiar with the Regional Centers I can assure you that what he says is wrong and self-serving. You can be HFA and be an RC client. There is not an epidemic in California. Rollens has also asked that locals thank him for getting ABA services paid for via the RCs. Thanks, but no thanks, my direct experience with a certain ABA entity in Calif is that they are abusive (read: hitting/slapping and isolation rooms) and that this should neither be funded nor tolerated. It also needs to be pointed out that Rollens has been known, when someone disagrees with him, to bellow at them that they (and their child) will be banned from ever using the services of the MIND Institute (part of the public univ. system)-- all because he says so. He's no advocate. He's a menace. Please delete this interview from the hub.

Maybe you need to leave your comments here for him to read them:

I tried that, posting there with a link to here. Didn't work.

FYI, for future readers, I understand Michael voluntarily requested un-listing from the Autism Hub.

Thank you Michael.

Your response is appreciated. Good luck to you and Autismpodcast.
